Safety Data Sheet Essentials
Safety Data Sheet Essentials is a short, practical course for workers who use, handle, store or may be exposed to hazardous substances in New Zealand workplaces.
The course explains what a Safety Data Sheet is, how to obtain the correct SDS for a product, and how to check that the product name, code, supplier and document details match. Learners are introduced to the 16 standard SDS sections and shown where to find information about hazards, safe handling, storage, exposure controls, PPE, first aid, spills, firefighting, disposal and transport.
Learners will also understand how SDSs should be kept current, accessible and available during an emergency, when an SDS may not be required, and what action to take if an SDS is missing, incorrect or unclear.
The course includes short video lessons, a fictional example SDS for practice, and a final knowledge assessment. It provides general online theory training and should be used alongside workplace-specific procedures, instruction and supervision.
